Holme Station–From the Mountains to the Sea
Set in rolling South Canterbury farmland, the Holme Station Homestead was
the very heart of a farm that once spread 82,000 acres from the foothills
of the Southern Alps to the Pacific Ocean. The founder, Edward Elworthy
was an energetic and far-sighted early founder of the New Zealand wool and
cereal cropping industries, the homestead reflects that pedigree. The ballroom
in the house was used regularly, the family enjoyed electric lighting, and
the grounds featured plants from all over the world.
